Dropping off to sleep (August 19, 2009)

The other evening I read "Harold and the Purple Crayon" to Bentley for his bedtime story.  Bentley actively engages books or videos with questions and participatory reading and quoting large portions of the familiar books., which he did too this evening.  After a Bible story, brushing teeth and going potty, we finally got to bed.  As Bentley walked into his room he strolled over to a shelf and picked up a green Nerf ball.  "Bentley," I cautioned, "no toys in bed."  "Papa," Bentley answered, "I want to have something to drop as I drop off to sleep." [basically a quote from Harold's story.]  I handed him a toy screwdriver, thinking in my adult way that it more closely resembled a crayon than a ball did, and kissed him goodnight and closed the door -almost- and sat down at a nearby table to do some schoolwork.  About 15 seconds later I heard a little "Clunk" as he dropped the screwdriver.  I crept into his room to se the screwdriver laying on the floor and Bentley already fast asleep.
